Transition Management

Transition – because there is no simple solution and climate change cannot be tackled in a single step.
Most measures to tackle climate change can be classified as either mitigation or adaptation. However, the complex and long-term nature of the problem and of the solutions means that a process of transition management is often required.

Many of the changes required to move from our current society to the low (or no) carbon, climate-adapted societies of the future will need a planned series of stages or stepping stones to ensure that the goal is achieved. A successful transition requires a number of things, including:

Applying longer-term thinking;
- Sequential and iterative planning;
- Consultation and participation to help build adaptive capacity (where society is supportive of necessary change, and has both the ability and willingness to change);
- Thinking more broadly about the problem and solutions than is usually the case;
- Taking measures that maintain, rather than close out, sustainable options in the future.

Innovation is central to the theme of transition because meeting the challenges of a changing climate means adapting our ways of thinking and acting.
